Appearance: Light orange to dark reddish brown monoclinic crystals. Pig bile source. Sensitive to light. The heated color gradually turns black and does not melt. Soluble in benzene, c-h-l-o-r-o-f-o-r-m, c-h-l-o-r-o-b-e-n-z-e-n-e, carbon disulfide, acids and bases, slightly soluble in ethanol and ether, almost insoluble in water. The light green solution shows red fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Stable when dry, c-h-l-o-r-o-f-o-r-m solution is stable in the dark, and alkaline solution is prone to oxidation.
